Norepinephrine and Dopamine Reuptake Inhibitors (NDRIs)

NDRIs are the sort of antidepressant that focuses on come down depression symptoms and mostly deals with suppressing irritability, groundless anger and sadness. Several chemicals in the brain are responsible for development depression if any abnormality in their functioning occurs.

These chemicals are called neotransmitters dopamine (DOE-puh-mene) and norepinephrine (nor-ep-ih-NEF-rin). NDRIs prevent cell reasorbtion of dopamine and norepinephrine, thus increasing their level in the brain. Due to this action the speed of neotransmission reaction (sending/receiving nerve impulses) is higher and it leads to elevation and improving of the mood.

Food and Drug Administration has officially approved only one antidepressant of NDRI group – Bupropion (chemical name; Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL – brand name). Bupropeon is produced in three variations:

• Immediate-release (it should be taken three times a day);

• Slow-release (it should be taken twice a day);

• Extended-release (it should be taken only once a day);

NDRIs may have several effects which include:

• Anxiety

• Dizziness

• Weight loss

• Sweating

• Ringing in the years

• Stomach pain

• Dry mouth

• Sleep disruption

• Pain in the muscles

• Vomiting and nausea

• Sore throat

• Constipation

• Fast heartbeat

• Skin rash

• Nervousness and shakiness

• Loss of appetite

• More frequent urination

• Agitation

• Dizziness

What you should know about NDRIs:

1. Of you have problems wit heart pressure, be careful when taking Bupropion because it can increase blood pressure. The risk of blood pressure may increase if you also use nicotine patch;

2. Be careful when taking Bupropion If you had previous cases of seizure, head injury or nervous system tumour or eating disorders (for example, bulimia). Inform your doctor about all health problems you are having/had before and about all medications you are taking/took before.

3. Bupropion can interact with other medications, especially with oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

4. Sometimes antidepressants may be connected with aggravation of depression symptoms or suicidal behaviour. It often happens during first weeks of treatment or if you change the dosage. Talk with your doctor if you see any changes in your symptoms.
