In general, having temporal and transitory periods of “blue” mood is quite normal, because life includes moments of sadness, disappointment or any other negative emotion. Every person may have difficult times and sorrow is no less natural than joy and serves as an adequate organism reaction on the events of the surrounding world. However, person who is unable to get rid of doleful mood for two weeks and more, it cam be a serious sign of depression. Certain measures are necessary to be taken in this case, especially if person’s condition tends to worsen and psychological confusion is accompanied by noticeable physiological disorders. Depression is a mental disease that is characterized by constant feeling of sadness, fits of anger or unwillingness to live and has some physiological manifestations, such as fatigue or loss of appetite. Every person can fall sick with it, regardless of his age, sex or social status. Depression is considered one of the most widespread mental diseases. Approximately 340 million people suffer from it within the period of every half a year, and women are generally more susceptible to this disease than men. One in four women and one in ten men are supposed to have a potential risk of having single/repeated depression during their life time. Depression is a curable disease. Up to ninety percent of all people with “depression” diagnosis can be successfully treated by means of two basic methods – medical counseling or/and taking medications. Scientists suggest that depression can be an inherited disease – i.e. children are predisposed to depression development if their parents faced this problem. Besides, elderly people are in an elevated risk of depression. |
